Forging the Future, Sustainably.
At United Heavy Industries, sustainability isn’t an initiative, it’s an imperative. As Africa’s first green steel producer, we are redefining what industrial responsibility looks like. Our operations are designed for low-carbon performance, high-efficiency output, and long-term environmental resilience.
From the energy we use to the materials we recycle, every step of our process is engineered to reduce impact and build a cleaner industrial legacy.

Pioneering Africa’s First Green Steel Mill
Located in Mandini, KwaZulu-Natal, our flagship facility integrates renewable energy systems with CORE (Compact Oxygen Reduction with Electrolysis) technology to produce stainless steel with a materially reduced CO₂ intensity, setting a new benchmark for regional green steelmaking.
Our approach includes:
- Fossil-free electricity generated via on-site solar PV systems
- Use of recycled steel inputs to support circular manufacturing
- Deployment of CORE-based hydrogen reduction processes for the production of sponge iron (DRI)
- Energy-efficient, electricity-driven induction furnaces
- Certification and issuance of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) to validate renewable power usage
Built on Responsibility. Measured by Impact.
UHI’s Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy is embedded across all three of our divisions, aligning our growth with our values.
- Environmental:
- Emissions reduction targets aligned with NERSA and AfCFTA sustainability directives
- Resource-efficient production and waste minimization
- Water management, biodiversity preservation, and pollution control
- Social:
- Job creation and skills development in underserved communities
- Local sourcing and supply chain empowerment
- Health, safety, and wellness programs for all employees
- Governance:
- Transparent compliance with South African and international regulations
- Ethics-driven leadership and anti-corruption standards
- Audit-ready reporting and stakeholder engagement
